Advisory Board
The Advisory Board serves as the guiding body of the International Society of Swimming Coaching as it's initiatives grow and move forward. . Established in 2011, the ISOSC Advisory Board is composed of researchers, scientists, swimming coaches with an expertise in a range of disciplines. The board members are selected due to the significant contributions he or she has made to; ISOSC, swimming coaching, research into the science of swimming. Below is a summary of their contribution to swimming science, swimming coaching and athletes.
DR. ROD HAVRILUK, PH.D (Scientific Advisor)
- Rod has a Ph.D. in human performance. Although he specializes in biomechanics, he has also maintained both a research and applied interest in skill learning and injury prevention. He is one of the most widely published authors on swimming technique and has made presentations to coaches and sport scientists all over the world.

- Has conducted human performance research with Olympic athletes
- Presents at National and International Swim Conferences
- Medical Testing Staff at US Olympic Trials
- Dr. Rod’s research has produced 3 patents producing the Aquanex Swim Technology (see website above)

DR Mário António Cardoso Marques, PH.D
- Assistant Professor with Aggregation at University of Beira Interior, Covilhã, Portugal.
- PhD in Sport Sciences Cum Laude at the University of Pablo de Olavide, Seville, Spain
- Professor and Researcher at the University of Beira Interior in the Sport Sciences Department
- Scientific domains include; swimming, resistance training and detraining in different populations, strength and energy expenditure, strength in power events, strength in elderly, applied biomechanics
- Plethora of publications including books and journal periodicals.

Andrew Sortwell MExSc, GrdDip Sprt Nut, BHMS (ED), Grd Cert RE
- Andrew has a Masters in Exercise Science, Graduate Diploma in Sports Nutrition and a Bachelor Human Movement Studies and Education. Currently completing PhD in the area of rate of force development and motor skills. He specializes in biomechanics and strength and conditioning. He has a research and applied interest in; swimming biomechanics, swimming coaching, physical education, strength and conditioning of Australian National Swimming Champions and World Championship Karate contenders. As an author, many articles have published, along with Original Research into swimming and biomechanics.

Dr. G. John Mullen
- John graduated from University of Southern California with a doctor of physical therapy and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.
- At USC, he was a primary investigator at the clinical exercise research center studying lung adaptations in swimmers and the effects of tri-axial vibration for adolescents at risk for type II diabetes
- John is a columnist for Swimming World Magazine, Swimmer Magazine, http://www.myhousecallmd.com/ and the creator of http://www.swimmingscience.net.
- He has treated and trained professional swimmers, hockey and basketball players and is the strength and assistant National team coach at Santa Clara Swim Club where he privately trains clients to optimize their swimming potential and decrease their structural and muscular limitations.
Allan Kopel M Ed, MBA
- Swimming Coach, Swimming Teacher and Land Based Fitness Coach.
- Has coached developmental through world ranked swimmers
- Has had articles published on swimming, land fitness and positive thinking
- A fitness enthusiast and passionate fitness advocate
- Earned an M Ed (Auburn University) and an MBA (Boston College)
- Is certified as a personal trainer with the American Council on Exercise
- Is a coach member in good standing with the ASCA & USA-Swimming
- Has coached age group, senior, masters and college swimming
DR Daniel Almeida Marinho DPT, CSCS (Biomechanics Advisor)
- PhD in Sport Sciences at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD, Vila Real)
- President of the Sport Sciences Department of the University of Beira Interior (UBI, Covilhã).
- Member of the Scientific Committee of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the University of Beira Interior (UBI, Covilhã).
- Full member of the Research Centre in Sports, Health and Human Development (CIDESD, Portugal).
- Areas of scientific study include; Biomechanics and Bioenergetics of Sports, Training, and Swimming.

Joe Giandonato MS, CSCS
- Is a Philadelphia-area and personal trainer, corporate health coach and freelance writer with nearly a decade of experience in the fitness industry
- He holds an Master’s degree in Exercise Science from California University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor’s degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University, where he studied psychology.
- Giandonato is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association
- Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES) through the National Academy of Sports Medicine and a Level 1 Sports Performance Coach through USA Weightlifting.
- He is also a professional member of the American Society of Exercise Physiologists and the American College of Sports Medicine.
- Giandonato has authored over 80 articles, which have been featured on Yahoo!, LIVESTRONG, T-Nation, EliteFTS, and JoshStrength.com.
- Presently, he is working as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Saint Joseph’s University (PA) in Philadelphia, PA.Swimming Coach, Swimming Teacher and Land Based Fitness Coach.
Kevin Thornton MS, BS, CSCS (Conditioning for Performance Advisor)
- Swimming coach of International swimmers
- Coach of Olympic medalists and World Record Holders
- Masters of Science degree
- Developed and initiated a scholarship program for less fortunate swimmers in his local community.
- Head Coach of a number of International Teams.
Jenni Brozena BS, CSCS, Sport Yoga Instructor (Strength and Conditioning / Performance Planning Advisor)
- Jenni graduated from West Chester University of Pennsylvania specializing in sports performance
- Professional Member of National Strength and Conditioning Association
- Developing NSCA Swimming Special Interest Group
- Developing aquatic therapy and swimming analysis program
- Programs built on well-rounded movement analysis of individual swimmers and their performance/rehabilitative needs

Dr. Stuart Jefferies, Ph.D (Co-Editor in Chief of ISOSC Journals)

- Reviewer for a number of International scientific journals and National institutions for proposals and grants
- Research interests include the use of technology for advancing swimming performance
